Conjuring audio-visual impression that would suit a cinematic interpretation of this work pianist Ketil Bjørnstad’s artistic imagination is once again on fertile form on this oriental sounding collection of pieces.
Exploring subtle moods of a romantic nature formed from that most enchanting of Nordic soundscapes – once again in the form of Eivind Aarset’s unmistakable guitar playing – the shimmering textures are very much in the tradition of the otherworldly northern European atmosphere. Also featuring viola player Nora Taksdal, and keyboardist Kjetil Bjerkestrand the melodic statements are concise yet intensely striking, the backdrops of sound allowing Bjørnstad and Taksdal plenty of space in which to solo with great poise and precise delivery.
With reoccurring themes, typical of Bjørnstad’s brilliant conception of any of his recording projects, the cinematic analogy is brought home throughout the album as various audio characters emerge. There are contrasts in Aarset’s guitar playing, at times metallic other time high-arching and soulful, while the piano and viola offer softer voices across the audio tundra. With subtle electronica permeating the mix to remind one of the modern world in which we live, yet it’s Bjørnstad’s light touch and organic instincts that really standout here.
