Fagottquartette gehören nicht unbedingt zu den Standardbesetzungen der Kammermusik - leider, möchte man sagen, denn Krommers Quartette Op. 46 sind ausgesprochen hörenswerte Juwelen. Als Kenner der Blasinstrumente lässt Krommer das Fagott hier nicht von einem konventionellen Streichtrio begleiten, sondern ersetzt die Violine durch eine zweite Bratsche. Das Ergebnis ist ein dunkel-warmes Timbre, das sehr schön die häufig ignorierten Vorzüge des Fagotts zu Geltung kommen lässt und auch bei Hummels Trio Effekt macht. Auf historischen Instrumenten holen die Musikerinnen um Jane Gower diese Musik zurück in die Klangwelt Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts.
