In England hatte das Flötenspiel eine lange Tradition. So besaß etwa König Heinrich VIII. (1491–1547), ein großer Musikliebhaber, nach einem Hof-Inventar von 1547 allein 79 Flöteninstrumente. Die barocke Blockflöte kam vermutlich mit den um 1673 angereisten französischen Holzbläsern nach England. Gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts hatte sich die Blockflöte in England zu einem Amateurinstrument par excellence entwickelt. Es waren vornehmlich Dilettanten aus Adel und gehobenem Bürgertum, die sich in ihren freien Stunden dem Instrument zuwandten. »Die Flöte war der Taschenbegleiter von vielen, die als Gentleman angesehen werden wollten«, schrieb John Hawkins 1776 in seiner General History of Science and Practice in Music.
