Extrapolation features John Surman, still one of Europe's most exploratory saxophonists; drummer Tony Oxley, who's forged a dynamic interaction with Cecil Taylor, and blues session bassist Brian Odges capably replacing Dave Holland, who'd been called to the States by Miles. McLaughlin plucks crisp, clipped, fleet single-note lines and lush or jangley chords; the quartet revels in 10 of his original compositions, several of which the guitarist carried on to Tony Williams' Lifetime and his own later bands.

ein Schlüsselalbum des Rockjazz!

Dieses Album von 1969 ist nicht, wie so oft geschrieben wird, der Bruder von "In a silent way", sondern der Zwilling von Jack Bruce's "Things we like". Während John McLaughlin bei Miles Davis doch eher im Hintergrund blieb und eine eher "normal" klingende Jazzgitarre spielte, bewegt er sich bei seinem ersten Soloalbum doch auf neuen Pfaden, die von Hendrix vorgegeben wurden: der Sound ist rockiger, der Ton wird auch verzerrt - McLaughlin probiert Neuland aus und man kann schon seine folgenden Gitarrengewitter (bei "Devotion" oder später beim Mahavishnu Orchestra) erahnen. Und da liegt er näher bei "Things we Like" von Jack Bruce. Dieses Album wurde im August 68 eingespielt, mit Jon Hiseman und Dick Heckstall-Smith, aber leider erst 1970 veröffentlicht, so daß die klare Linie von einem Album zum andern verloren ging. Aber im Verein mit John Surman spielt McLaughlin hier einen sehr britischen Jazzrock, am ehesten noch vergleichbar mit Sachen von der Graham Bond Organization oder den frühen Colosseum - wenngleich die Betonung hier doch mehr auf Jazz statt auf Rock liegt. Ein sehr empfehlenswertes Album für jeden Liebhaber guter Gitarrenmusik!

die erste Exploration

Dieses erste Solo-Album John McLaughlins, welches er 1969 aufnahm, also im gleichen Jahr, wie bei seiner Mitarbeit an Miles Davis' legendärer Bitches Brew Session, trägt bereits die deutliche Fusion- Handschrift des genialen Gitarristen. Der Zugang zu diesem Werk fiel mir zu Beginn etwas schwer, da McLaughlin und seine Mitstreiter hier auch offen mit dem Freejazz kokettierten. Trotzdem (oder deswegen) wird dieses Album von Kritikern hoch gelobt.
