Mit seinem signifikanten Keyboardspiel prägte Ray Manzarek maßgeblich den Sound der amerikanischen Rockformation The Doors, die bis heute zu den einflussreichsten Gruppen der 60er und frühen siebziger Jahre zählt.
Nach dem Tod von Sänger Jim Morrison und der Auflösung der Band (1973) vornehmlich solotechnisch aktiv, veröffentlichte der ehemalige Filmstudent (UCLA) und spätere Produzent (und Film-Regisseur) diverse Soloalben wie „The Golden Scarab“ (1974) und „Carmina Burana“ (1983), war Mitglied der L. A.-Band Nite City und arbeitete u. a. mit Echo & The Bunnymen, Iggy Pop und „Weird Al“ Yankovic.
Für sein neues Album „The Piano Poems“ kollaborierte er wieder mit dem renommierten Lyriker / Dramatiker Michael McClure, mit dem er bereits zuvor die beiden Longplayer „Love Lion“ (1993) und „There‘s A Word!“ (2001) eingespielt hatte. Ende 2011 live mitgeschnitten im intimen Ambiente der Noe Valley Ministry (einer ehemaligen viktorianischen Kirche) in San Francisco fusionieren hier Spoken Word / Poetry und inspirierte Piano / Jazz-Improvisationen zu einem spontan dynamischen Ganzen in bester Beat-Generation-Tradition. Unterstützt wurden sie dabei von dem Jazz-Flötisten Larry Kassin (Bobby McFerrin, Jessica Williams, Sf Klezmer Experience).
This latest release, a collaboration with Ray and poet Michael McClure entitled “The Piano Poems: Live From San Francisco”, takes Ray’s music to another dimension.
Michael McClure states:
On a cold, foggy night in San Francisco after a great Japanese meal, Manzarek and I stepped onto the stage and there were sparks of consciousness — the stage was on fire with poems and piano Improvisations. The symbiosis and the synergy made lights. Then Larry Kassin stepped up to join us with his jazz flute and Lou Judson was recording. This is a live album with its heart still beating — no tricks, gimmicks, or second takes. We are bringing together my poetry and Ray’s improvisations that shape my word-sounds into richer meanings: Piano Poems.
There’s no way to be without a politics or an antipolitics, no way to be without art, without anger and generosity, without laughter and kindness.
That’s the edge we’re whetting on this album.
