Dazwischen liegen völlig unorthodoxe Versionen der große Jazz-Songs „My Funny Valentine“ und „I’ve Got You Under My Skin“, die aber hier so natürlich wirken, als wären sie schon immer so interpretiert worden. Die Songs auf dieser CD hätten ihn ausgewählt, nicht er sie, sagt Copland, und er spiele sie so, wie sein Herz und seine Ohren es ihm sagten.
Das Ergebnis ist ein ungemein fein und vielschichtig gespielter Jazz eines Trios, das seine hohe spieltechnische Virtuosität kunstvoll zwischen höchst lebendig imaginierten Song-Zeilen versteckt. Vor allem aber: Musik, die die Tonlagen der Liebe ein ums andere Mal atemberaubend präzise trifft.

Love has many modes – especially when someone like Marc Copland traces its ups and downs. Along with partners Drew Gress (bass) and Jochen Rueckert (drums), the American pianist has recorded “Some More Love Songs” – seven years after the same trio recorded their first successful album of instrumental versions of well-known love songs. Once again, the trio surprises, enthralls, and delights with sparklingly beautiful interpretations laced with multi-layered intimacy. The CD begins with a composition by singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in which the pain of love in doubt is explored in ambivalently shimmering textures. It ends with an especially sensitive, darkly toned ballad. In-between lie unorthodox versions of such famous standards as “My Funny Valentine” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”. The pieces play so naturally that it seems as if they were always so interpreted. Copland says that he didn’t choose the songs on this CD; they chose him, and he plays them the way his heart and his ears tell him to. The results: extraordinarily subtle and multi-layered trio-jazz played with a virtuosity concealed within vibrantly imagined lines of the songs. Above all, this is music that breathtakingly pierces the heart of love time and time again.
