1995 überraschten die beiden erstmals mit einem wunderbaren Gospel- und Spirituals-Album namens "Steal Away". Es wurde damals für zwei Grammys nominiert! Jetzt, fünfzehn Jahre nach dem Erfolg, gingen der mittlerweile 74-jährige Bassist und der 91-jährige Pianist erneut ins Studio, um den Faden auf "Come Sunday" wieder aufzunehmen. Es sollte bedauerlicherweise Jones' letzte Einspielung sein: am 16. Mai 2010, gut drei Monate nach Fertigstellung der Aufnahmen, verstarb der berühmte Pianist.
Wie das Vorgängeralbum umfasst das Repertoire auch hier christliche Hymnen wie "Blessed Assurance", "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" und "Bringing In The Sheaves". Und wieder verbreiten Haden und Jones eine musikalische Magie, die unter die Haut geht.
Two jazz legends, bassist Charlie Haden and the late pianist Hank Jones, teamed up again for an unforgettable and beautifully inspired collection of classic spirituals, hymns and folk songs entitled Come Sunday. This CD marks the follow-up to their 1995 Grammy-nominated “exquisite” (New York Times) recording, Steal Away, and was the last collaboration between two longtime friends and colleagues. In a career spanning over 70 years, Hank Jones passed away in 2010 at the age of 91, shortly after completing this album.
Come Sunday was recorded at the famed Sear Sound Studio in New York City on February 2nd and 3rd 2010. The album’s name and title track were derived from the fact that “Come Sunday” was the day to worship, where the enslaved Africans congregated to pray and sing in call and response form. The CD features several Christian hymns such as “Blessed Assurance”, “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”, “Bringing In The Sheaves” as well as a couple of Christmas holiday favorites including “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”.
Together, Charlie Haden and Hank Jones are a magical force. In the liner notes written by Maurice Jackson he commented “with these hymns they present the songs and the sounds of peace, of hope, and of the goodness of the human spirit.”They capture the essence of the music perfectly with their masterful yet simple approach to these classic songs that bring the listener back to a time that will never be forgotten in our history
