Von allen englischen Oratorien war Händels Messias immer das beliebteste. Händel verzichtet auf große Theatralik, statt dessen steht der sakrale Aspekt (Geburt, Tod und Auferstehung des Erlösers) im Vordergrund. Der lebendige Chorgesang - im Messias gibt es mehr Chöre als in jedem anderen Händel-Oratorium - und die ausdrucksstarke Dichte der Solo-Arien haben ihm den Status als eines der größten Chorwerke im westlichen Kanon gesichert.
