Die grandiose Filmmusik zur letzten Schlacht
1965 hatte einer der ganz großen Kriegsfilme Premiere, der die entscheidende Schlacht des 2. Weltkrieges, die sog. Ardennenoffensive, zum Thema hat: The battle of the bulge, zu deutsch: Die letzte Schlacht. Unter dem Motto „The most intensely personal drama of men ever told“ boten Warner Brothers eine Crew von Weltstars auf – unter ihnen Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas – und engagierten den zu der Zeit wohl renommiertesten Filmmusikkomponisten: Benjamin Frankel. Dies sollte sich als Glücksgriff entpuppen, wurde doch Frankels Partitur 1966 in Hollywood für einen Golden Globe in der Sparte „Beste Originalmusik“ nominiert. Die Jury tat Recht daran; ist diese Musik doch wesentlich mehr, als bloße Untermalung: Sie ist ein eigenständiges grandioses Musikdrama ohne Worte, das in seiner symphonischen Dichte fast zu schade für den Film ist.
