Quo vadis

Der Schwede Anders Eliasson ist einer der ganz großen Unangepassten in der Welt der zeitgenössischen Musik. Wie sein Landsmann Allan Pettersson steht er wie ein erratischer Block in der musikalischen Landschaft – und ist (deshalb oder trotzdem?) immer noch ein Geheimtipp. Warum eigentlich? Vielleicht weil er sich profitbedingten Moden, Loyalitäten und Cliquen, deren Berechtigung er durchaus versteht, aus Überzeugung nicht anschließen kann. Wer über Eliassons Musik spricht, verwendet Bilder aus der Natur, spricht von „organisch pulsierender“ Musik, ihrem „vegetativ Organischen“. Sie setzt, wie aus dem Nichts kommend, enorme Energieschübe frei. Dissonanz und Konsonanz sind in seiner Musik aufgehoben. Quo vadis geht auf eine Anregung des Dirigenten Manfred Honeck zurück. Nachdem Honeck künstlerischer Leiter des schwedischen RSO geworden war, bat er ihn 1998 um ein Requiem: „Ich begann ein Requiem zu schreiben, merkte aber, dass ich zu wenig christlich war. Auch auf eine existentielle Krise fand ich keine Antwort. Es drängte sich jedoch eine Frage auf: Quo vadis, domine. Diesen Text hatte ich schon lange gekannt. Er war die Antwort. Eine Gattungsbezeichnung verweigert die Partitur. „Symphonische Kantate“ trifft es aber wohl am besten.

The Swedish composer Anders Eliasson is one of the great nonconformists in the world of contemporary music. Like his countryman Allan Pettersson, he stands out like an erratic block in the musical landscape and (therefore or nevertheless?) continues to be an insider’s tip. Why is this so? Perhaps because personal conviction keeps him from lending his support to fashions, loyalties, and cliques formed by the profit motive – even though he recognizes that they have their place and purpose. Those who speak of Eliasson’s music employ images from nature, speak of »organically pulsing music,« of its »vegetative organic quality.« His music releases enormous thrusts of energy as if from nowhere; the categories of dissonance and consonance are eliminated in it. Quo vadis goes back to a suggestion by the conductor Manfred Honeck. After Honeck had become the artistic director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, he requested a requiem from Eliasson in 1998: »I began to write a requiem but noticed that I was too little Christian. I also found no answer to an existential crisis, but one question arose: Quo vadis, Domine. I had long known this text. It was the answer.« The score does not indicate the work’s genre, but »symphonic cantata« would come the closest to describing it.
