Joshua ist die Welterstaufnahme des dramatischen Oratoriums von Franz Waxman, der seinen hundertsten Geburtstag am 24. Dezember 2006 gefeiert hätte. Er starb am 24. Februar 1967 in Los Angeles im Alter von 60 Jahren. Franz Waxman gehört zu einer Gruppe jüdischer Komponisten, die vor dem 2. Weltkrieg in die USA immigrierten. In Hollywood arbeitend, schrieb er unter anderem Soundtracks für Fritz Langs »Liliom«, Billy Wilders »Sunset Boulevard« (Oscar), Hitchcocks »Rebecca« und »A Place in the Sun« (Oscar). Joshua ist ein Oratorium, das auf einer biblischen Figur basiert. Waxman hat dieses Werk nach dem Tod seiner Frau komponiert.

Hochkarätig besetzt sind die Solistenpartien mit Rod Gilfrey und Ann Hallenberg, durch deren ausdrucksstarken Mezzosopran diese Aufnahme enorm gewinnt. Ein Werk, das sich ohne größere Probleme auch beim breiteren Publikum durchsetzen könnte, ist es doch geprägt von einer unmittelbar überspringenden Dramatik, thematisch kreisend um die alttestamentarische Schlacht um Jericho und stilistisch leicht zugänglich, da Waxman niemals den tonalen Boden verlässt."- Tracklisting
