Der schottische Komponist Oliver Knussen feiert in diesem Monat seinen 60. Geburtstag. Das einstige Wunderkind, das sein erstes Stuck im Alter von sechs Jahren komponierte und mit 15 Jahren die Uraufführung seiner ersten Sinfonie mit dem London Symphony Orchestra selbst dirigierte, gehört heute zu den angesehensten Persönlichkeiten der zeitgenössischen Musik in Großbritannien. Neben Neuproduktionen feiert NMC den Komponisten u. a. auch mit dieser Zusammenstellung, auf der Werke aus den 1970er Jahren zu hören sind. Darunter seine brillante zweite Sinfonie in Form eines Liedzyklus‹ auf Gedichte von Georg Trakl und Sylvia Plath und seine dritte Sinfonie, eine Art sinfonische Dichtung über die Figur der Ophelia aus Shakespeares Hamlet. Oliver Knussen, Conductor

Born in Glasgow in 1952, Knussen grew up near London, where his father was principal double bass of the London Symphony Orchestra. It was with the LSO that he made his debut in April 1968, conducting his First Symphony in London and in Carnegie Hall, New York. In 1970 he was awarded the first of three fellowships to Tanglewood, where he studied with Gunther Schuller. During this time he completed several works which were subsequently widely performed on both sides of the Atlantic and established his early reputation. In 1975 Knussen returned permanently to the UK.
