Vielleicht schwebte Johann Sebastian Bach etwas Ähnliches vor, wie es das moderne Pianoforte inzwischen darstellt. Denn seine »Kunst der Fuge« erscheint, als sei sie für eine Art Idealtypus der im Barock vorhandenen Tasteninstrumente geschrieben, eine Mischung aus Cembalo, Clavichord, Orgel und Kammerorchester, mit den unterschiedlichen Farben und Assoziationen, die dadurch hervorgerufen werden. Für Pierre-Laurent Aimard jedenfalls ist der kontrapunktische Zyklus wie geschaffen, denn der französische Meisterpianist versteht es wie kaum ein anderer, mit den Andeutungen zu arbeiten, die den Werken Bachs innewohnen. So ist »Die Kunst der Fuge« ein Schmuckstück seiner Künstlerdiskographie.
