Das Ballett Der wunderbare Mandarin, das Béla Bartók 1926 vollendet hatte, wurde nach nur einer Vorstellung wegen seines Inhaltes Prostitution, Räuberei und Totschlag – verboten. Die Orchestersuite zum Ballett wurde aufgrund der mitreißenden Rhythmen und der gewagten Harmonien jedoch sehr schnell zu einem populären Orchesterwerk. 1940 emigrierte Barók in die USA und erkrankte an Leukämie. Während einer Phase der Erholung entstand ein Klassiker der Moderne, sein „Konzert für Orchester“, das am 1. Dezember 1944 vom Boston Symphony Orchestra uraufgeführt wurde.
