Ende der 30er Jahre wechselte Edna Gallmon Cooke von klassischem und musischem Theater zum Gospel und wurde in der Holiness Church geweiht, wodurch sie den Ehrentitel »Madame« erhielt. Sie entwickelte ihren unverwechselbaren Stil des Tonbeugens bei Auftritten im Südosten der USA. Ende der 40er Jahre begann sie mit Aufnahmen für die Labels Merit, DeLuxe, Regal und Republic, bevor sie 1953 zu Nashboro aus Nashville wechselte und bis zu ihrem Tod 1967 im Alter von 49 Jahren dort blieb. Dieses umfassende 2CD-Set mit 49 Tracks beinhaltet Material von all diesen Labels, darunter frühe Aufnahmen mit dem Mount Vernon Men's Choir, B-Seiten vieler ihrer Singles sowie Songs, die nur auf ihren Alben »He'll Fix It« und »Stop Gambler« 1960 und '61 erschienen sind. Viele ihrer Aufnahmen sind schwer zu finden und waren bisher kaum auf CD erhältlich.
