"(...) It would probably not be an overstatement to
call this the most influential Brazilian album
of all time. Originally released in 1959, Chega de Saudade
is the album cited as creating bossa nova so to say that it lit a fire in the music world would be putting it mildly. It would be
perhaps more accurate to say that it influenced so
many musicians both at home (Caetano
Veloso, Jorge Ben, etc.) and abroad (Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd)
that it effectively
single-handedly changed the way people both made and listened to music, and

From the original liner notes.
Chega de Saudade is the 1959 debut album from Brazilian musical legend Joao Gilberto, featuring the most famous recording of the title track by Antonio Carlos Jobim, widely regarded as the first bossa nova song ever recorded. Hailed as the fourth best Brazilian album of all time by Rolling Stone it also features his fantastic interpretation of another Jobim classic, »Desafinado«, and his own »Bim-Bom« which many believe to be the first written bossa nova track. Needless to say, this album is a milestone in Brazilian recordings and bossa nova music and essential to any serious collection of either.
