Arild Andersen, known for his long association with the German label ECM, brings his usual sensitivity and improvisational prowess to this meeting of musical minds. His combination of a lifetime of experience and a beautiful tone make for a inspiring presense when combined with the subtle rich sounds of Clive Bell's woodwind arsenal and (the project's curator and leader) Mark Wastell's delicate and varied percussion textures. After a live concert performance which gained rave reviews at Cafe Oto in London, the musicians reconvened and spent the next day perfecting their group sound in the studio, running music and specifying technical requirements. Once they were happy with microphone positioning things were set to begin again the following day - a ten hour session which was spent recording together with intermittent periods of rest to reflect on the music and to hear what they had created. The music, being completely improvised, was fresh to everyone as they listened back to it in the studio. Arild used double bass with some of the custom electronic effects that he has used throughout his career as a creative, forward thinking jazz musician. Clive Bell utilises a vast array of Asian wind instruments through which he manages to coax a huge range of different colours and timbres and which compliment his two playing partners perfectly. This album sees the ensemble navigate a intricate musical conversation with one another. I liken free, improvised music to a pencil rubbing over paper on the bark of a tree. The resulting image should trace the essential and physical, the real world flaws of the tree …. this is a beautiful thing. Moving from euphoric peaks to soft, lulling, trance-like sound worlds, their material contains all the feeling of structure and intent that written music has but defiantly retains the improvised, organic sound that 'free' music should try and capture. Patience and restraint play as much of part of this album as bold moves forward through the music and these three musicians manage it superbly. (John Bailey)
