Eigentlich heißt die amerikanische Blues-Ikone Henry St. Clair Fredericks und wurde 1942 in New York geboren. Vater und Mutter haben ihm die Musik in die Wiege gelegt. Anfang der 60er Jahre begann Taj, der Name entstand durch einen Traum, mit seinen Elektras zu mucken und schon 1966, ein Umzug nach Kalifornien war zwischenzeitlich erfolgt, gründete er mit Ry Cooder die legendären Rising Sons. Der Album-Erfolg, erst "offiziell" 1992 vermarktet, enttäuschte ihn und er lustwandelte fortan solo. Hier gelang ihm 1968 der Durchbruch und Klassiker wie "Natch´l Blues" oder "Giant Step" folgten.
