Als 1994 Shane MacGowan die Pogues verließ, gründete er kurzerhand eine neue Band namens The Popes. Zusammen haben sie zwei Studio- und ein Live Alben veröffentlicht, bevor sich die Popes als eigenständige Band etabliert haben. Mit Paul (Mad Dog) McGuiness am Gesang gehören The Popes zu einem weiteren Highlight der Irish-Folk-Rock Szene.
