Vocalist and guitarist John Primer offers 12 tracks on his Telarc debut, Knocking At Your Door, including seven originals and refreshing new interpretations of Johnny Shines’ “Brutal Hearted Woman” and Jimmy Rogers’ classic “That’s Alright.”
An excellent live performer with great chops, Primer moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1963, then secured his place in the blues pantheon as sideman to Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim. Some artists proclaim themselves with a bravura that demands attention; others like Primer impress with their conviction and skills.
Backing Primer is an accomplished studio band, with the McCray brothers, Larry on guitar and Steve on drums, as well as harmonica wizard Matthew Skoller and bassist Al Brown, two stalwarts of the Chicago blues scene. Special guest keyboardist Ken Saydak is known to many blues fans through his work with Johnny Winter, Lonny Brooks.
This is the third collaboration between Primer and producer Mike Vernon. (concordmusicgroup. com)
