DOUBLE GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ALBUM, DEAR ELLA: recorded in 1997, is Bridgewater’s tribute to her legendary elder, twelve songs with the profound imprint of “The First Lady of Jazz.” The Kenny Burrell composition that gives the recording its title, “Dear Ella,” features Dee Dee in a duet with Kenny Burrell on guitar, a structure Ella especially enjoyed and used, particularly with Joe Pass.
Most of the accompaniments Ella chose during her career are represented here. Dee Dee evokes the big band sound and the beautiful songbooks’ orchestra of woodwinds, brass and strings. She summons moments of grace on “Slow Boat to China” and "Mack the Knife” in the trio format in which Ella traveled most often for the freedom and flexibility they gave her.
And like Ella, who was considered a musician so at ease when conversing with soloists, Dee Dee magically blends her voice with the instruments on “How High the Moon,” singing or scatting with renowned improvisers: Milt Jackson, Slide Hampton, Cecil Bridgewater. Each song allows Dee Dee to show every facet of her art: playful “A-Tisket, A-Tasket”, charming “Midnight Sun”, luscious “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”, vivacious “Mr. Paganini”, tender “Dear Ella”– a “jazzwoman,” actress, and musician all at once. – Claude Carriere (deedeebridgewater. com)
