Es ist ein Aufeinandertreffen zweier musikalischer Legenden, wie man es bislang noch nicht erlebt hat – obwohl 70 Jahre zwischen den Künstlern liegen. Das Maßstäbe setzende Musikgenie Brian Wilson, Mitbegründer der Beach Boys, hat sich für sein Debütalbum auf dem Label Disney Pearl des Schaffens von George Gershwin angenommen. Neben zeitlosen Klassikern wie “Rhapsody In Blue", "I Got Rhythm" und "Summertime" besticht das Album Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin vor allem durch zwei Aufsehen erregende neue Songs, "The Like In I Love You" und "Nothing But Love", die Brian Wilson aus bislang unveröffentlichtem Material von George Gershwin schuf.
Brian Wilson erklärt seine große Vorliebe für George Gershwin: “Neben Irving Berlin hat George Gershwin eigentlich den Popsong erfunden, aber das ist nicht alles. Er hatte eine spezielle Gabe für gute Melodien, an die niemand anders heranreicht. Trotzdem ist seine Musik zeitlos und immer ansprechend. Dieses ist das spirituellste Projekt, an dem ich je gearbeitet habe.”
Das neue Album, das Brian Wilson mit seinen langjährigen Bandgefährten eingespielt hat und das von ihm selbst produziert und von dem mit mehreren Grammys ausgezeichneten Techniker Al Schmitt abgemischt wurde, besticht durch seine typisch verschachtelten Gesangsharmonien und jene Orchestrierung, die Brian Wilson zu einem der herausragenden und weltweit bewunderten Popkünstler gemacht haben. Zu den Songs gehören seine persönlichen Lieblingsstücke von George Gershwin, etwa "Summertime", "I Loves You, Porgy", "I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’" und "It Ain’t Necessarily So" (alle aus der Oper "Porgy & Bess”), sowie "’S Wonderful", "I’ve Got A Crush On You" und "They Can’t Take That Away From Me". Eingerahmt wird das Album durch eine A-Cappella-Version von "Rhapsody In Blue”, jenem 1924 entstandenen Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte, auf dem Brian Wilson seine beeindruckenden Gesangsharmonien zum Besten gibt.
Die beiden neuen Stücke, "The Like In I Love You" und "Nothing But Love", werden mit Sicherheit das leidenschaftliche Interesse von Musikwissenschaftlern und Fans wecken. Ersteres basiert auf “Will You Remember Me?”, einem Song, den George Gershwin 1924 für das Musical “Lady, Be Good!” komponiert hatte, der dann aber für die Produktion nicht eingesetzt wurde. „Nothing But Love“ geht zurück auf “Say My Say”, ein Songfragment von 1929, das die Gebrüder Gershwin nie fertig stellten.
Letztes Jahr stellten die Gershwin-Nachlassverwalter und Warner / Chappell Music Brian Wilson über 100 Klavier-Demos mit unveröffentlichten oder unbekannten Songs und Melodien zur Verfügung, allesamt aus dem Nachlass des 1937 verstorbenen George Gershwin. Brian Wilson suchte sich zwei Stücke aus und schuf dann neue Kompositionen, die seinen Stil mit dem George Gershwins kombiniert.
"Adam Gershwin, the great-nephew of George and his brother / lyricist Ira, notes that this is the first time the family has authorized "derivative works of George and Ira Gershwin songs with new lyrics." Once the estate found out Wilson was planning a tribute, he was granted access to more than 100 obscure and unfinished songs.
Gershwin sees "a great similarity" between Wilson and his great-uncles. "Brian also is a musical visionary and refuses to be pigeonholed within a musical genre. It seemed to me a match made in heaven."
Wilson insists he "can't believe that anyone would compare" him to his childhood idol. Yet in describing his enduring attraction to Gershwin's music, Wilson cites qualities that many rock critics have attributed to his own lush, harmonically intricate work. "I love the melodies, and the way (Gershwin) orchestrated the chords around them," Wilson says. It makes his excursion through material that’s been so widely performed for the better part of a century a uniquely illuminating outing...There’s no doubt that Wilson’s album will elicit some squawking from those who prefer a Sinatra-Tony Bennett-Ella approach. "Was 1969 den Beach Boys mit ihrer Version von Leadbeltys ,,Cotton Fietds" gründtich misslang, funktioniert hier - mit Ausnahme des indiskutablen ,,l Got Rhythm"-Verschnitts - erstaunlicherweise gut, obgleich man sich über so viel Chuzpe gelegentlich beim Schmunzeln erwischt. Immerhin war das Vertrauen in Wilsons Künste bei den Gershwin-Erben so groß, dass man ihm zwei Songfragmente aus dem Nachlass überantwortete. Und was macht der Schelm daraus?
