Der in L. A. berüchtigte Philip Marlowe (James Caan - Der Pate) will sein turbulentes Leben als Privatdetektiv an den Nagel hängen. Dort erwarten ihn nicht nur Palmen und coole Drinks, sondern auch ein neuer Fall. Augenscheinlich sieht es für Marlowe nach einer simplen Erpressung aus, aber bald wird klar, dass der Privatdetektiv nur die Spitze des Eisberges getroffen hat. Er kommt einem knallharten Deal der einflussreichen Männer der Stadt auf die Schliche, die mit dem angrenzenden Land eine Menge vor haben. So gerät Marlowe ungewollt in politische Intrigen und wird sogar selbst verdächtigt.
