Das mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnete Album Portraits Of Cuba ist die vielleicht beste Scheibe von Paquito D’Rivera. Der in Kuba geborene Saxofonist und Klarinettist nahm die 13 Stücke 1996 mit einer Bigband unter der Leitung von Carlos Franzetti auf, einem klassisch geschulten Arrangeur, den Experten mit Gil Evans vergleichen. Der ‚allmusic-guide’ geht sogar soweit, das ganze Album mit Evans’ spektakulärster und wichtigster Session „Sketches Of Spain“ auf eine Stufe zu stellen. Jetzt gibt es den gewichtigen Latin-Jazz-Klassiker erstmals als Hybrid SACD, mit einer noch mal gesteigerten Dynamik.

Riveras Meisterwerk in audiophilem Wohlklang stellen manche Kri- tiker in den USA auf eine Stufe mit Miles Davis´ "Sket- ches Of Spain".
