Recorded in 1956, this album is often cited as Hoagy Carmichael’s last significant recording. While best known as the composer of numerous tunes in the jazz canon, Carmichael, like Duke Ellington, was also a performer.
Along with his friend Bix Beiderbecke, he came of age in the jazz era of the 1920s, penning the tune “Riverboat Shuffle,” which became a Dixieland standard. While Carmichael recorded for RCA in the ‘30s and Decca in the ‘40s, he spent most of his career penning new songs and acting in films. However, in 1956 he returned to the recording studio when Pacific Jazz asked him to record ten of his songs rendered in a jazz setting. Johnny Mandel wrote the charts and an 11-piece all-star band featuring alto saxophonist Art Peeper and trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison provided the support as Carmichael sang such numbers as “Skylark” and “Georgia on My Mind.”
Writing in the new liner notes that accompany the original notes on this CD reissue, Michael Cuscuna says, “This album is something of a love letter, beautifully chronicling the love affair between Hoagy Carmichael and jazz. It's a classic.”
