The diversity of the recordings selected here demonstrates the genius of this Gypsy guitarist in every aspect. In nine tracks, we may appreciate his music from the pre-war days, from 1937 to 1939 and the thirteen others in discs cut between 1946 and 1951, most often using an amplified guitar. In the first part, we find the freshness of the debuting years of the famous ‘Quintette du Hot Club de France’, featuring the symbiotic collaboration of Django with violinist Stéphane Grappelli (Djangology, Body And Soul, Souvenirs, My Sweet etc.) as well as dazzling solos (I’ll See You In My Dreams, Tea For Two). Django and Stéphane’s London get-togethers are illustrated here in three tracks recreating the original quintet (Embraceable You, Belleville, Mélodie au Crépuscule), a group revived in Paris in 1948 (Fantaisie, Festival 48). Meanwhile, a new style of instrumentation had been set up, including a clarinet and drums (Danse Norvégienne, Topsy), Django had teamed up with Duke Ellington for a lovely American adventure (Ride Red Ride, A Blues Riff) before showing his independence with the young jazz modernists of the period (Vamp). His last years (Django died in 1953) were spent in idleness, as a billiard champion, a painter and an occasional guitarist, according to his whims and infrequent contracts.
Rezensionen
