Right from "Them there eyes", there was no doubt about another fact: Stephane Grappelli and Oscar Peterson were made to play together. At length, and with delectation. Both are romantics, and the one is as uncompromising as the other, notonly where swing is concerned, but also in their lyricism, especially when it has this quality. The long unfolding of their joint paths, for which "Flamingo" or "My one and only love" are just pretexts, show the delightful greed with which each feeds on the honeyed findings of the other. They may know how to move you, but they can also show nonchalance just as gleefully, as on "Looking at you" or "Makin' whoopee". For "Thou swell", Oscar chisels the introduction, Stephane states the theme, and no continuity slips in, whatever the kind. However open he may be to all sorts of adventure. Grappelli loves nothing more than feeling at home with someone. During this session, after mentioning the unfailing support he received from Django Reinhardt, Stephane declared: "Since then, I've found George Shearing, Martial Solal, Oscar Peterson, Marc Hemmeler and Daniel Humair, all of whom have made me feel comfortable." Many were called, but only five were chosen.
