Klingende Würdigung eines britischen Klassikers: William Walton

Jahrhundertelang jubelte man in England hauptsächlich Komponisten anderer Länder zu: Händel, Haydn, Dvorák. Erst gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts fand die britische Insel zu einem ganz eigenen Stil – und einer der prominentesten englischen Vertreter zwischen Romantik und Moderne war William Walton. Das OEuvre dieses Komponisten ist mit vielen glanzvollen Aufnahmen im Katalog von EMI Classics präsent – Grund genug, diesem Meister endlich seinen Platz in der exklusiven COLLECTOR’S EDITION einzuräumen: Ein ganzes Dutzend CDs würdigt das vielfältige Schaffen William Waltons in dieser Box.

Für seine Verdienste als Sinfoniker stehen die Sinfonien Nr. 1 und 2, zwei Meilensteine der Orchestermusik des Jahrhunderts aus den Jahren 1935 und 1960, emotionsgeladen und farbenreich mit moderner Umdeutung traditioneller formaler Modelle.

Großen Raum nehmen auch Waltons Instrumentalkonzerte ein: Ida Haendel ist die Solistin seines Violinkonzerts, Lynn Harrell spielt das Cellokonzert, und im Konzert für Bratsche und Orchester kann man einen Künstler erleben, der heute zu den außergewöhnlichsten Geigern gehört: Nigel Kennedy!

Mit „Troilus and Cressida“ schuf Walton in den 50er Jahren eine der bedeutendsten englischen Opern der Moderne. Als Zeitgenosse des Kinos gehört zu Waltons Œuvre auch Filmmusik. Aus den Partituren großer Shakespeare-Verfilmungen schuf er eindrucksvolle programmatische Orchestersuiten, die in dieser COLLECTOR’S EDITION ebenfalls nicht fehlen.
