Die vierte Symphonie ist auf jeden Fall der Zenith in Andriessens Œuvre und ein perfekter Ausdruck seiner vielfältigen künstlerischen Fertigkeiten. Wie in der Symphonischen Etüde aus demselben Jahr verwendet der Komponist auch hier eine zwölftönige Melodie im Dienste der zyklischen Geschlossenheit. Die harmonische Sprache des Werkes ist nicht die Folge der zwölftönigen Melodie, unterstreicht aber natürlich ihren besonderen Charakter. Zur selben Zeit jongliert Andriessen auf faszinierende Weise mit Metren und Tempi, indem er ernste und tiefe Momente mit überraschenden Tanzelementen abwechseln läßt. Während in seiner Rhapsody „Libertas Venit“ viele Stellen an die finsteren Tage der deutschen Besatzung erinnern, handelt es sich bei seinem Capriccio um in ein jeder Hinsicht leichtgewichtiges, fröhliches Musikstück. Man gewinnt den Eindruck, daß der Komponist es im Jahre 1941 als Gegengift gegen die Grausamkeiten des Krieges geschrieben hat. Die Partitur ist brillant, sehr tonal, direkt und in ihren rasch wechselnden Tempi und Stimmungen wohldurchdacht.

Hendrik Andriessen’s Symphony No. 4 beyond doubt marks the absolute zenith of his oeuvre and represents a perfect expression of his multifaceted artistic capabilities. As in the Symphonic Étude from the same year, here too the composer employs a twelve-tone melody in the interest of cyclical unity. The harmonic language of the work is not the consequence of the twelve-tone melody, though it of course underscores its special character. At the same time Andriessen fascinatingly juggles with meters and tempos by having serious and profound moments alternate with dance elements. While in the »Libertas Venit« rhapsody many passages recall the dark days of the German occupation, his Capriccio is in every respect a lighthearted, mirthful piece of music. Our impression is that the composer wrote it in 1941 as an antidote to the horrors of World War II. The score is brilliant, very tonal, direct, and carefully thought out with swiftly alternating tempos and moods.
