Mussorgskys Oper »Boris Godunow«, eines der zentralen Werke der Opernliteratur, wurde unter Aufbietung vieler Stars, allen voran des Orchesters selbst, den Berliner Philharmonikern, sowie gerade in den Nebenpartien, mit Marjana Lipovsek und Samuel Ramey, aufs Edelste im November 1993 eingespielt. Claudio Abbado, seit langem auch ein ausgewiesener Mussorgsky-Spezialist, gelang damit eine bis heute gültige Referenzaufnahme in absoluter Luxusqualität. Auch aufnahmetechnisch setzte die Einspielung Maßstäbe. Und interpretatorisch gelang mit der Besetzung der Titelpartie mit Anatoly Kotscherga als ein geradezu menschlich-inwendiger Boris zudem noch ein besonderer Coup.
