September 1952) Porgy and Bess, George Gershwins einzige Oper nach einer Reihe von 14 Musicals und das Meisterwerk des amerikanischen Musiktheaters, musste sich seinen Weg zu den deutschen Hörern hart erkämpfen, da es während des Dritten Reichs als "Negermusik" verfemt war. Erst die legendäre Inszenierung von Robert Breen, die zwischen 1952 und 1955 auf USA- und dann Europa-Tournee ging, brach den Bann. Der vorliegende Mitschnitt dokumentiert das Gastspiel des Ensembles bei den Berliner Festwochen 1952. Die Bedingungen waren ideal: Mit Alexander Smallens stand der Dirigent der New Yorker Uraufführung von 1935 zur Verfügung, der eine erstklassig besetzte Solistenauswahl zu Höchstleistungen animierte. Zu ihr gehörte neben William Warfield und Cab Calloway auch die junge Leontine Pryce sie dürfte hier zum ersten Mal auf einer Aufnahme überhaupt zu hören sein. Es entstand ein fesselndes Dokument höchster musikalischer und darstellerischer Intensität, das den Hörer atmosphärisch und dramatisch von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute in Atem hält. Die Produktion ist Teil unserer Reihe "Legendary Recordings" und trägt das Qualitätsmerkmal "1st Master Release". Dieser Begriff steht für die außerordentliche Qualität der Archivproduktionen bei audite. Den historischen audite-Veröffentlichungen liegen ausnahmslos die Originalbänder aus den Rundfunkarchiven zu Grunde. In der Regel sind dies die ursprünglichen Analogbänder, die mit ihrer Bandgeschwindigkeit von bis zu 76 cm / Sek. auch nach heutigen Maßstäben erstaunlich hohe Qualität erreichen. Das Remastering - fachlich kompetent und sensibel angewandt - legt zudem bislang verborgene Details der Interpretationen frei. So ergibt sich ein Klangbild von überlegener Qualität. CD-Veröffentlichungen, denen private Mitschnitte von Rundfunksendungen zugrunde liegen, sind damit nicht zu vergleichen.

The blockage was only broken by the legendary production by Robert Breen which was toured first in the US and then across Europe from 1952 until 1955. The present recording documents the guest performance of the ensemble at the Berliner Festwochen 1952. The conditions were ideal: the music director, Alexander Smallens, had also conducted the New York premiere in 1935. He inspired a stellar cast of soloists to perform on the highest level. Amongst them are William Warfield, Cab Calloway and also the young Leontyne Price this is probably the very first sound document on which she can be heard. Here is a captivating document of the highest musical and dramatic intensity, making the listener hold his breath atmospherically and dramatically from the first to the last minute. The production is part of our series "Legendary Recordings" and bears the quality feature "1st Master Release". This term stands for the excellent quality of archival productions at audite. For historical publications at audite are based, without exception, on the original tapes from broadcasting archives. FonoForum 11/08: Die Aufführung mit dem legendären Porgy des William Warfield, der blutjungen Leontyne Price als Bess (vermutlich ihr erstes Tondokument!) sowie mit Cab Calloway - der als Sportin' Life sich selbst spielt, war er doch Gershwins Vorbild für diese Figur - reißt durch ihren Elan vital noch immer unmittelbar mit. Die monaurale Wiedergabe ist dabei kein echter Nachteil. Einzig das unter Alexander Smallens schmissig spielende RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester klingt in den Streichern etwas dünn.
