Kunst als Dialog zwischen Tradition und Moderne: Igor Strawinsky entdeckte bei einem Museumsbesuch die 1732 / 33 entstandene Kupferstichserie The Rake's Progress von William Hogarth. "Rake" läßt sich nicht eindeutig ins Deutsche übersetzen. "To rake well" meint zusammenraffen, zusammenharken, während "rake" allein einen Wüstling oder Lebemann bezeichnet. Die satirisch-kritischen Blätter Hogarths zeigen die Lebensgeschichte eines haltlosen jungen Mannes, der auf der Suche nach Lustgewinn seine Seele verrät und daran zerbricht. Strawinsky und sein Librettist Wyston Auden schufen in ihrem Tom Rakewell die Figur des Schizophrenen, Zerrissenen, der schließlich Traum und Wirklichkeit nicht mehr voneinander unterscheiden kann. In seinem Entwurf für das Glyndebourne Festival stellte sich Pop-Art-Pionier David Hockney erneut der Auseinandersetzung mit dem ihm bereits bekannten Stoff, Grundmotiv seiner Umsetzung sind extrem vergrößerte Schraffuren, so daß die gesamte Ausstattung, die Kostüme eingeschlossen, aus schwarzen, roten, blauen oder grünen Strichen auf weißem Grund besteht. Hockney begnügt sich also mit den Druckerfarben des 18. Jahrhunderts, wohl wissend, daß in der Beschränkung oft die größte Freiheit der Phantasie liegt.
