Anton Rubinsteins Oper „The Demon“ entstand 1871, war ein Meilenstein des Musiktheaters und geriet dennoch fast vollständig in Vergessenheit. Erst in jüngster Vergangenheit ist „The Demon“ wieder auf Bühnen innerhalb und außerhalb Russlands zu sehen. Rubinstein, Gründer des ersten Russischen Konservatoriums in St. Petersburg, kombinierte in seiner Oper sowohl russische als auch westeuropäische Musikstile und integrierte auch den musikalischen Geist des Kaukasus.

Die vorliegende Aufnahme entstand 1974 unter der Leitung von Boris Khaikin. Alexander Polyakov, der später ein gefeierter Solist am Bolschoi-Theater werden sollte, ist hier der Titelrolle zu hören.
