Roy Harris hat der amerikanischen Orchestermusik einen unauslöschlichen Stempel aufgedrückt, indem er die symphonischen Traditionen der Alten Welt mit dem Individualismus der Neuen Welt belebte. Vor dem Hintergrund des Krieges in Europa schuf er seine Fünfte und Sechste Symphonie, von denen die erste "dem heldenhaften und freiheitsliebenden Volk unseres großen Verbündeten, der Union der Sowjetrepubliken" gewidmet ist, während die zweite, mit dem Untertitel Gettysburg, "den Streitkräften unserer Nation" gewidmet ist. Der einsätzige Satz Acceleration wurde später in der Sechsten Symphonie überarbeitet. In jedem Stück wird Harris' nationalistischer Eifer von einem unerschütterlichen Glauben an die Fähigkeit des menschlichen Geistes untermauert, über Widrigkeiten zu triumphieren.
