Recently, a CD released by Excelsior Recordings has been edited, as never before in Record History and for the first time: original Opera Arias and Scenes, combined with Paraphrases for Piano as arrangements on a single disc. For this special CD-release a suitable title has been chosen: “RADIO RELYVELD presents: Music for DIVAS, HEROES and PIANO-LIONS”.
This brand-new disc contains Arias and Scenes from the opera “Lucia di Lammermoor” of the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). During his age, like his contemporary Vincenzo Bellini and the history of Italian Opera in particular, he achieved fame to heighten the so-called genre of ‘Bel Canto’ towards its peak. Besides Donizetti’s operatic masterpieces like his three ‘Queen Operas’ such as “Anna Bolena”, “Maria Stuarda” and “Roberto Devereux”, his famous opera “Lucia di Lammermoor” belongs to one of his most well-known Operatic Opuses. On this classical Excelsior-CD one could listen to Great Recordings of Golden Age Sopranos from the 20th century: Maria Callas with the great tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, and Joan Sutherland. This release is also a honourable Tribute to them, and in this case the touching ‘Mad Scene’ from Lucia can be heard in two recorded versions (combined on one disc for the first time!): with Maria Callas, La Divina, and Joan Sutherland, La Stupenda.
Additionally, this disc contains ‘devilish’ and fiendishly difficult Paraphrases for Piano as arrangements based on themes from Donizetti’s Lucia by Franz Liszt (1811-1886). These most brilliant operatic paraphrases as well as powerful ‘showpieces’ are tackled by the American pianist William Wolfram. With his interpretations he delves deep into the composer’s sound world in particular. The punchiness of his playing, with a palpable sense of vigour in some specific passages is awe-inspiring!
Liszt as a composer was a true Innovator, and often being considered as one of the greatest piano virtuosos of Western Music History. The behaviour of his bewitched 19th century audiences being present at his concerts has been compared by those around 20th century pop- and rock stars like Madonna, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Prince and Michael Jackson. Even with an entertaining ‘cult figure’ like the pianist Wladziu Valentino Liberace. This phenomenon sorted with a suitable ‘hint’ to release a classical CD on a pop label par excellence like Excelsior which contains excellent recordings by Top Rank musicians.
Interesting liner notes full of new information worth knowing are combined with this disc. May this CD with legendary performances lead to new-found, never thought-off stimulating discoveries for every listener!
