Die jüngste Neubewertung seines Schaffens macht Hofmann zu einer Hauptfigur in den Kompositionen des 18. Jahrhunderts, die von Haydn und Mozart in den Schatten gestellt wurden.
Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens, von 1765 bis 1774, komponierte er über sechzig Konzerte für verschiedene Instrumente, darunter sechs für Violoncello. Warum er sie schrieb - damals arbeiteten die Komponisten in der Regel mit jemandem im Kopf, oft mit sich selbst - ist ungewiss. Wir wissen, dass sich der gefeierte Cellist Luigi Boccherini zu dieser Zeit in Wien aufhielt und der virtuose Cellist Joseph Weigl Mitglied des Hofmann-Orchesters von St. Peter war. Beides könnte der Grund dafür gewesen sein.
Sie wurden offensichtlich für hervorragende Musiker mit einem hohen Grad an Virtuosität geschrieben. Noch wichtiger für die damalige Zeit war die Qualität der Begleitung, die oft symphonischen Status hatte. Nirgendwo ist sie deutlicher zu erkennen als im Kopfsatz des C-Dur-Konzerts, mit dem diese CD endet. Es ist ein Werk, das Haydn mit großer Freude komponiert hätte. Sicherlich gab es zu dieser Zeit niemanden, der so hervorragende Musik für das Cello schrieb, ein Instrument, das nicht besonders beliebt war und dem man bestenfalls eine Rolle als Continuo-Instrument zuschrieb, das dem Orchester einen Bass gab.
Recent reassessment of his output places Hofmann as a major figure in 18th century compositions that has been overshadowed by Haydn and Mozart.
During the peak of his output, from 1765 to 1774, he composed over sixty concertos, for diverse instruments, including six for cello. Why he wrote them - in those days composers usually worked with someone in mind, often themselves -is uncertain. We do know that the celebrated cellist, Luigi Boccherini, was in Vienna at that time, and the virtuoso cellist, Joseph Weigl, was a member of Hofmann's orchestra at St. Peter's. Either could have been the reason.
They were obviously written for outstanding musicians with a high degree of virtuosity. Even more important, for that era, was the quality of the accompaniment, which was often of symphonic status. Nowhere is that more in evidence than the opening movement of the C major concerto which ends this disc. It is a work that Haydn would have been overjoyed to compose. Certainly there was no one at this time writing such outstanding music for the cello, an instrument that was not particularly popular, and was seen, at best, as having a role as a continuo instrument giving a bass to the orchestra.
