Henry Purcell, dessen 350. Geburtstag wir 2009 mit einer herausragenden Purcell-Edition feiern, schuf noch 1695, im letzten Jahr seines Lebens, die Semi-Oper The Indian Queen, die auf dem gleichnamigen Stück von Sir Robert Howard und John Dryden basierte. Schon 25 Jahre zuvor hatte das Theaterstück Premiere gefeiert, Purcell gelang mit neuer, dramatischer Theatermusik eine völlige Überarbeitung der im antiken Mexiko angesiedelten Geschichte.
