Ein postumes Oratorium
Mit seinen Oratorien schuf Händel eine Form geistlicher szenischer Musik, die bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein Komponisten wie Haydn, Beethoven und Mendelssohn zu eigenen Schöpfungen inspiriert hat. Mozart fertigte eine Bearbeitung des Messias an, die auch heute noch aufgeführt wird und in zahlreichen Einspielungen vorliegt. Das englische Publikum liebt Händels Oratorien bis auf den heutigen Tag, sie gehören nach wie vor zum festen Bestand des britischen Musiklebens.
Anders als sein Leipziger Kollege Johann Sebastian Bach geriet Händel nach seinem Tod nicht in Vergessenheit, wie das Oratorium Israel in Babylon beweist. 1764, fünf Jahre nach Händels Tod, wurden die beliebtesten Melodien des Komponisten zu diesem Stück zusammengefügt, das bei seiner Uraufführung das Londoner Publikum begeisterte. Händels Opern, Oratorien und Orchesterstücke sind die Quellen, aus denen die Arrangeure von Israel in Babylon geschöpft haben, und noch für heutige Hörer wird das Werk zu einem Feuerwerk der musikalischen Höhepunkte aus der Feder eines der größten Komponisten der Musikgeschichte.
