Fiddling of the highest order, and beautiful too.
When I heard Hilary Hahn for the first time I was not only surprised by her technical skills but also by the she communicatis with her bow and fiddle; this lady has something to say.
I own most of her records, but the Elgar/Vaughan-Williams is very special to me, because on this records she is deeply moved by the composer herself, and that brings she over upon the listener beatifully. That's the reason why I call her a great communicator among the fiddlers. She is in permanent competition with another great fiddler, Janine Jansen. But where Janine is charmed her way into the audiences, remained Hilary always the hard working music student from Baltimore, MD.
Why I am very fond of this particular record? First, the Elgar is a very noble and ripe piece of music, brought to you in a very mature way by Ms. Hahn. The Lark Ascending by Vaughan-Williams is quiet the opposite of that. It's full of romantic lyricism and tender melodies, a love song at large. In both shines our aristocratic lady fiddle to the utmost.
I consider this record as a pinnacle in Hahn's oeuvre and for that of fiddling in common alike. I recommend this piece of art then also without any hesitation.
