Jack Welch, geboren 1936, wuchs in bescheidenen Verhältnissen auf. Schon früh entwickelte er großen Ehrgeiz und unbändige Willensstärke, als Schüler, als Sportler, als Student. promovierte 1960 als Ingenieur und begann ein Jahr später seine Karriere bei General Electric. 1981 wurde der 45-Jährige jüngster Vorstandsvorsitzender des Unternehmens. Während seiner Amtszeit nahm er eine radikale Umgestaltung vor, formte GE zu einem internationalen Mischkonzern und machte es zum mit Abstand teuersten Unternehmen der Welt.§
