Carl Djerassi, geb. 1923 in Wien, aufgewachsen z.T. in Bulgarien, der Heimat seines Vaters, schließlich 1938 nach Amerika übersiedelt, wo er studiert hat und sich als Naturwissenschaftler, später auch als Mäzen, Kunstsammler und Autor, einen Namen machte.
