The MDR Symphny Orchestra performs 22 soul classics by Al Green, Glady Knight & The Pips, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or Minnie Riperton. Vocals performances by Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele & Tweet. Many an album has been dubbed a "Soul Symphony" - ranging from cool sixties Jazz records to a smooth Soul album in 2005. Yet it is "The Dresden Soul Symphony", which is without a doubt the first masterpiece to truly merit this title. On this simultaneous CD and DVD release, we see 22 of Soul's most beautiful songs skillfully united to form a highly sensual, exciting and symphonic sound, sung by the shining stars of today and played by a top class Symphony Orchestra. Germany's 'Soul Queen', Joy Denalane originally got the ball rolling for the collaboration after a radio concert on MRD Sputnik. Together with Missy Elliot's protégé 'Tweet', the 'Soulquarian' Bilal and the elegant 'Dwele' from 'Motown' Detroit, Joy Denalane forms the vocal spearhead of this project.
The Symphony creates a steady but brilliant build up of musical tension, working its way through the classics; from "Midnight Train To Georgia" to "I Got A Woman", from "ABC" to "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", "T. S.O. P" and "Love Train". Two unique American individuals are to thank for this skillfully woven tapestry of sounds and sensations; the legendary Larry Gold, one of the most important 'Philly Sound' arrangers of the 70's and the most sought-after string-composer of the new generation, and his son-in-law Daniel Felsenfeld. The amazingly seamless and harmonious nature of this unison is also largely attributable to the chief conductor Jun Märkl, who, with the greatest ease and concentrated precision, was able to constantly spur on his 130 instrumentalists to new heights of achievement. The "Midnight Train to Georgia" forms the overture, interlude and finale. Interspersed between this are over 20 hits which stir emotions and memories, including "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green, Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", the dance-floor classics "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross and "Master Blaster" by Stevie Wonder, as well as the famous Motown Duet "You're All I Need to Get By". Last but not least we have "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" - the perfect motto for "The Dresden Soul Symphony", which is indeed pretty much unstoppable: surpassing any previous efforts, it succeeds brilliantly in uniting an orchestra (and thus the world of classical music) with soul music and its melodies, emotions and grooves.

Rezensionen
