Das Ergebnis des Zusammentreffens zweier musikalischer Masterminds, das von wahrscheinlich allen Fans progressiver Musik heiß und innig erwartet wird, hat nun einen Namen: STORM CORROSION. Die Rede ist von Steven Wilson, Frontmann und Kopf der britischen Progger Porcupine Tree, und Mikael Åkerfeld, Sänger und Kreativ-Chef der schwedischen Prog-Metal Legende Opeth. Dieses gemeinsame Projekt nimmt den Hörer mit auf eine beispiellose Reise in noch nicht erschlossene Klanggefilde.

„We never discussed what we were going to do," erinnert sich Åkerfeldt. „I went down to hang out at Steven's house, and we drank wine and talked about music, but neither of us had anything prepared. We wrote the song ‘Drag Ropes' (Storm Corrosion's opening track) that first night, and we both thought it was pretty cool. We'd never heard anything like it and it doesn't really sound like our bands. We found our own niche, right then and there."

„It was special, different and intriguing," stimmt Wilson zu. „We ran in the opposite direction of the idea of a prog metal supergroup that people had been talking about and expecting from us. It was a chance to delve into more experimental ideas. We were being wilfully self-indulgent in the best possible way, making music to please ourselves. There's something wonderfully pure and liberating about that you can hear that in these songs."

Wilson hat in der Vergangenheit schon mehrere Opeth Alben gemischt, aber es ist das erste Mal, dass er und Åkerfeldt wirklich zusammen Musik geschrieben haben. Aufgenommen wurden die insgesamt sechs Songs von „Storm Corrosion" in Wilson's No Man's Land Studio in Herfortshire, England.

Wie schon ihre beiden letzten Veröffentlichungen - Wilson's „Grace For Drowning" und Opeth's „Heritage" - die die jeweilige Fan Base herausgefordert haben, indem der bekannten Soundpalette ganz neue Nuancen hinzugefügt wurden, ist auch dieses erste gemeinsame Album eine Lehrstunde in musikalischer Freiheit. Einfach alles ist möglich, vollkommen neue, verführerisch verstörende Sounds wurden geformt. Das facettenreiche „Drag Ropes", der aufreibende, nicht klassifizierbare Titel Track, die fragile Bedrohung die von „Ljudet Innan" (was im schwedischen „ancient music" bedeutet) ausgeht - Storm Corrosion ist ein epischer, aber auch verstörender Trip.

„You can hear it in Opeth and in my music, the idea of taking something beautiful and destroying it," erklärt Wilson. „We have both always loved the idea of discord, of beauty, and ugliness side by side. Without being too pretentious, that's what life is like, so you hear a lot more of that coming out in Storm Corrosion. It's heavy, but without the use of the metal vocabulary. You can hear that on ‘Grace For Drowning' and on ‘Heritage' too. So I think, in many ways, this is the completion of a trilogy."

Obwohl in der Traditon von Alben wie Talk Talk's „Spirit Of Eden" und Scott Walker's „The Drift" erdacht, ist Storm Corrosion unmissverständlich ein Werk intensiver Kreativität und Originalität.

„It was very much a 50 / 50 effort and very easily achieved," erzählt Åkerfeldt. „We just sat down, started from scratch and created it all from nothing. There's some beautiful music on there but it's a demanding record. If you're doing other shit as you listen to it, it's going to pass by like elevator muzak. You really have to sit down and pay attention! If you allow it to sink in, it could be a life companion..."

Jeder, der die Karrieren von Wilson und Åkerfeldt verfolgt hat, sollte sich darauf vorbereiten, offen für Unerwartetes zu sein, da zwei unterschiedliche künstlerische Kräfte das erste Mal frontal aufeinanderprallen. Für beide ist klar, dass Storm Corrosion nicht automatisch jeden Opeth oder Porcupine Tree Fan zum Jubeln und Tanzen bringen wird, dafür ist es zu anders, zu außergewöhnlich.

„For me, self-indulgence is one of the fundamental things about being an artist," so Wilson abschließend. „Do not make music or art to please other people. If you do, you've stopped being an artist and you've become an entertainer. This is a very cinematic, impressionistic and immersive record. We just got together and it poured out of us. With this record you're entering into a very unusual and unfamiliar sonic universe and that's a very exciting thing to be part of."
