Ruth Brown, the original queen of rhythm and blues, spent most of 1985 in Paris singing and acting in a musical theater production called Black and Blue. Three years later, the show debuted on Broadway. Brown took the theater world by storm with her natural comedic timing and gutsy delivery of the show's classic blues songs, and in 1989 became the recipient of a prestigious Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical." Blues on Broadway finds Brown reprising several of the show's songs, along with related material, in the empathetic company of a swinging band that features the searing saxophones of Hank Crawford and Red Holloway. The album earned Brown her first Grammy–for "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female."
