Das "German Guitar Wunderkind" stieg nach Jugendjahren bei den Scorpions, der Hannoveraner Band seines Bruders Rudolf, 1973 als gerade mal 18-jähriger bei der englischen Hard Rock-Gruppe UFO ein und gab nach seinem Abschied dort (1979) noch einmal ein kurzes Gastspiel auf dem Scorpions-Klassiker "Lovedrive", bevor er 1980 die erste eigene Band ins Leben rief, kompromisslos nach ihm selbst benannt, damit von vornherein klar war, um wen's hier geht.Die Michael Schenker Group nahm in den folgenden 5 Jahren ein halbes Dutzend Alben für das Chrysalis-Label auf, 4 formidable Studio-Scheiben und 2 Live-Platten, die jetzt alle zusammen samt einiger weiterer Bonus-Pretiosen in einem Package mit dem schlichten Titel "The Chrysalis Years (1980-1984)" vereint sind.
Neben seinen unglaublichen Saitenkünsten sowie den illustren Sängern (Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet) und Sidemen (u. a. Don Airey, Simon Phillips, Cozy Powell) sind es vor allem die Live-Sachen, die die Zuhörerschaft begeistern, zum einen der Klassiker "One Night At Budokan" (1982) mit dem mitreißenden UFO-Cover "Doctor, Doctor", zum anderen, aus dem Londoner "Hammersmith Odeon" stammend, "Rock Will Never Die" (von der 83er-Tour), schließlich auch noch 7 frühe und bisher unveröffentlichte Live-Tracks, die während der ersten UK-Tour der Band in Manchester aufgezeichnet wurden, auch hier mit UFO-Cover ("Rock Bottom").
