The 1977 solo album from the wondrous lead vocalist from gospel’s first family, The Staples Singers. Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield it is a successful move away from sacred music to soul and funk.
Mavis Staples is best known as the exceptional lead singer of The Staples Singers, one of the world’s foremost gospel groups.
Released by Curtom Records in 1977, ‘A Piece Of The Action’ was the soundtrack to the film starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby.
Like several other soundtrack albums which Curtom released in the Seventies, it was produced by Curtis Mayfield, who also wrote all the songs.
‘A Piece Of The Action’ proved to be one of Mavis’ most successful ventures into secular music. A heady mix of funk (‘Chocolate City’, ‘Orientation’) and sexual innuendo (‘Getting Deeper’, ‘Koochie, Koochie, Koochie’), it is a criminally-overlooked soul / funk gem from the Seventies which is long overdue this CD re-issue.
