Kick off your dancing shoes and lay still awhile... Oozing warmth like hot sand underfoot, Serve Chilled is where Kandi calms right down with the choicest of low-slung chillery. This new selection is the equivalent of a massage for the ears. With sights firmly fixed on the beginning of summer the emphasis here is on blue sky blissed-out beats, visceral vocals, and gorgeous grooves.

Once again, we’ve a collection of the familiar, the brand new and the beautifully strange, with elements of lounge, soulful jazz and nu-beats, Balearic electronica, funk and chilled Latin – that together make one of the best ways to unwind by the pool, relax on the beach or just generally restore that Kandi sense of well-being! The first disc gets under way with the acoustic version of The Cure and The Cause. Sometimes chillout versions of familiar tracks feel contrived but this Fish Go Deep track sounds like it was written this way. Tracey K’s vocal sets the beautiful lazy afternoon tone. The Freemasons’ Rain Down Love and, later on disc two, Kings Of Tomorrow’s Finally follow in similar vain with simple, unostentatious downtempo productions that prove the best songs work in a number of different contexts.

Other disc one highlights include Aim return with the tripped out funk of Northwest and we’re very lucky to have Cagedbaby’s Little Man, which comes from the forthcoming unreleased album. Fous De La Mer capturing everything that’s perfect about Serve Chilled in one record with Watersong. Just imagine licking that Serve Chilled ice lolly as you’re listening to this record and you’ll hit the spot. We love Cicada and disc one closes with Tricks, which has the trademark vocal of Heidrun Bjornsdottir layered over the electro-funk bass and guitar line.

Disc Two starts with Solar Stone’s Seven Cities, a chillout classic – very optimistic and powerful. Koop return with the melancholic Koop Island Blues and no Serve Chilled album would be complete without the influence of Afterlife’s Steve Miller, who, along with ex-Café Mambo resident, Pete Gooding give us Party Animal under the name No Logo and offers up the Afterlife remix treatment on the Stereo Mutants’ I Wanna Go. Mitchell and Dewbury is a name familiar to Hed Kandi. Ben Mitchell and Russ Dewbury released their album, Rapping With The Gods originally on the Mumo label (a former Hed Kandi stablemate) and the title track had the Eric Kupper remix treatment on Disco Kandi in 2003 – and still sounds great! Love Is Flowing To Love featuring vocalist Billie Godfrey really soothes the soul with a positive spirit. Owusu and Hannibel from West Coast US label, Ubiquity, would have to go down as a real cool tastemakers choice, whilst Ashley Beedle gets it completely right once again with Magic Touch that rounds of this year’s edition.
