Im Jahr 1973 erschien das erste Album der Dead auf dem Bandeigenen Label Round Records. Zuvor war der neun Alben Deal mit Warner Music erfüllt worden und passend hierzu könnte man den Albumtitel als Nachlauf der Flut übersetzen. Ohne den Druck der schnellen Veröffentlichung erlaubte man sich eine opulente Produktion mit 24 Spuren und nahm tatsächlich zusätzlich zu den sechs Bandmitgliedern noch eine sechsköpfige Bläsersektion mit aufs Band. Drei Jahre nach der letzten Studio LP hatte man genug Zeit gehabt sich in Livesets vorzubereiten und tatsächlich wurden viele der Songs schon vor Publikum gegeben und hatten jetzt die so bekannte Magie der Dead.

Die opulente Produktion bietet Hits wie Eye of the World und legte den Grundstein für die Weather Report Suite, welche sich in den folgenden Jahren zu einem immer opulenteren Werk für die Live-Auftritte entwickeln sollte. Das MFSL ReMastering stammt von Krieg Wunderlich und wurde im Half-Speed-Verfahren durchgeführt. Die LP erscheint mit fortlaufender Seriennummer als Limite Edition.

A new lineup emerged after keyboardist / vocalist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan passed away and the group landed jazz-schooled pianist Keith Godchaux and his wife, Donna, who gave the ensemble a new option in the form of a dedicated backing vocalist. Having road-tested a batch of new originals, the collective eagerly sought to expand its broad musical palette in the form of a large-scale studio LP that involves horn sections, violin, and choral figures. Diverse, unique, and mellow, 1973's Wake of the Flood overflows with the luminous vision, stellar songwriting, and ensemble reciprocity made possible by its historical circumstances and inspired creators.
