"Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is a Vermont-based band that has recently gained national attention with its newest album, This Is Somewhere. The band blends funky blues, soul and rock from the sixties and early seventies.
The lead vocalist is 26-year-old Grace Potter who attended St. Lawrence University for two years before heading off into the world of music. She plays the Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer Electric Piano, and electric and acoustic guitars. Also in the band are Scott Tournet (guitar / slide guitar / harmonica), and Matthew Burr (drums). Bryan Dondero played bass (electric and upright) and mandolin with the group until his departure in early 2009." (electricmud. blogspot. com)
Rezensionen
"This is Somewhere is notably their most mature and freespirited recording to date. You’ll find comfort and confidence in the songwriting and a true urge to let loose and rock out. From the caffeinated “Stop the Bus” to the tender “Falling or Flying” this album is perfectly produced and orchestrated with a full range of rockin’ tunes and ballads. A blend of classic rock sensibilities, soul drenched vocals and introspective lyrics, This is Somewhere will certainly find its way onto many top indie charts this year." (twangville. com)
"Sounding for all the world like some long-lost sister of the Allman Brothers, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have proven that it’s possible to entwine brawn and brain—not to mention spirituality and sensuality—and still come out at the top of the jam band heap. This Is Somewhere, the third full-length from Potter and her rough-and-ready band, offers a more concentrated, higher-octane blend of old-school boogie and slow-simmering soul than they’ve cooked up in bygone days. Grace is the focal point, thanks to both her honeyed vocal rasp and the turns she takes on organ and Gibson Flying V." (gibson. com)
"And it’s that frankness, combined with the jam band expanding funk of a lean four-piece, that drives sheets of B-3 undulation straight into a lacerating guitar screen, that gives the Nocturnals the straight-up thrust that applies the Allman Brothers flex, Heart’s folk / rock hybrid and the Faces no-shame raucousness. “Falling or Flying,” “Lose Some Time” and heart-wrecked “Apologies” all take a fragile beauty on the craggy shores of want and desire, while “Stop the Bus” bulks up the muscle and libido to a full steam ahead proposition."
