Product Information

During the 1980s, George Jones found a comfortable niche in the country market, cranking out slow heartbreak ballads. Like Chips Moman and other hot Nashville producers of the era, Billy Sherrill set Jones' vocals against easy- listening instrumental backgrounds, complete with electric piano, effects-heavy guitar, marimba, and celeste. The goal was to entice a crossover audience, as Willie Nelson had done with "Always On My Mind" and his subsequent middle-of-the-road recordings.

Both albums are very much a product of those times and as always, Jones acquits himself well it has been said that he would sound good singing the telephone book, and he certainly sounds good singing these songs.

George Jones over the past 20 years has frequently been referred to as "the greatest living country singer." Country music scholar Bill C. Malone writes, "For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics, and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved."

George Jones has had more than 150 hits during his career, both as a solo artist and in duets with other artists. Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes was released in 1985 and reached #6 in the U. S. Billboard Top Country Albums. The singles, Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes reached #3, The One I Loved Back Then also reached #3 and Somebody Wants Me Out Of The Way # 9. Wine Colored Roses a year later peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and went Gold. (cherryred. co. uk)
